Oviedo - 19th September 2013

We had breakfast at Hotel Vetusto and decided that, after a visit to the Cathedral and getting our "credencial" for the Camino, we would walk to the Naranco churches (Los Monumentos) near Oviedo. The hotel had some sandwiches prepared for our lunch, we bought an umbrella at a nearby "ferreteria", and set off to the cathedral.
After our visit to the "Camara Santa" and the cathedral's interior we walked through town towards the railway station, in the hope of getting a bus to the Naranco churches. Eventually we decided to walk straight up the mountain and were in time for guided tours in both "Monumentos" churches.
After the visits we had out snack lunch and took a 11 km "shortcut" to Escamplero, a village on the first leg of the Camino primitivo when leaving Oviedo.
Late afternoon we took a bus back to Oviedo, had a nice dinner in town and went exhausted to bed at Hotel Vetusta.

17th September 2012 - Leaving for Spain

Our backpacks and travel documents were ready for the IBeria flight from SJO to MAD this afternoon. Our walking sticks were not allowed in overhead luggage, so we sent a well wrapped package in the hold of the plane.
After the more than 10 hours flight to Madrid, we had to wait another 5 hours for our connection to Oviedo. We managed to take the 6 pm airport bus to Oviedo (45 minutes' drive) and walked to Hotel Vetusta in the town center, where we had booked in advance. We sampled dinner in a bar and were ready for a long night's sleep.
